The Utsav, day by day
From the first kalash on Pratipada to the kanya pujan and havan on Navami — here is the full celebration process, and what to light at each stage.
The utsav opens with the kalash installed on a bed of soil and barley seeds sown around it. The akhand jyot is lit and, for many households, will not be allowed to go out for nine nights.
The fiercest form of Maa is honoured through the night. Books rest untouched before Saraswati, and jaggery is offered as bhog.

Sweep the altar area, wipe it down and sprinkle a little Gangajal. Do this fresh each morning before lighting anything.
Fill a copper kalash with water, place mango leaves on the rim and a coconut on top. Sow barley seeds in a bed of soil beside it — you’ll watch the jowara sprout over the nine days.
Fill the lamp with Deepotsav pooja oil, set a cotton wick, and keep it burning continuously through all nine nights if you’re taking the akhand jyot vow.
Offer the day’s colour and flower — hibiscus, marigold, mogra or lotus depending on the night (see the nine-nights slider above).
A metallic dhoopstick for a long session, or a Khushali sambrani cup for aarti. Circulate the smoke clockwise around the idol; never blow it out — wave it gently instead.
Ring the bell, sing the aarti, and pass a lit camphor slab on the aarti plate in slow circles before the deity.
Fruit, sweets or a simple sattvic dish. Offer it, let it rest a few minutes, then distribute to the household.
Prepare the sacred fire and offer hawan samagri a handful at a time with each mantra or “swaha,” closing with a full aarti and kanya pujan.
Light the tip for 3–4 seconds, blow the flame out gently, and rest the ember end in a stand so ash falls freely.
Light directly from a matchstick or diya flame, then set on a heatproof plate — it smoulders rather than burns.
Self-lighting — touch a flame to the rim, place in the holder, and let the loban smoke fill the room.
Break off a small piece onto the aarti plate. Never leave a burning slab unattended, and keep windows part-open.
Add to an established fire in small handfuls with each "swaha" — never pour the box in at once.
Fill the diya two-thirds full, submerge the wick tail, and leave the tip dry before lighting.
